What was your first project that made you feel like a real artist and how did you get it?
My first commercial comic job was a five-issue miniseries called “Finding Molly: An Adventure in Catsitting” with EMET Comics that I found through an artist call on Tumblr (oh, 2015). It was the first full comic I’d ever drawn and my first time working with a writer and colourist, so I learned a lot of drawing skills very quickly; I remember before I did that job, I constantly said that I didn’t do backgrounds because they were too difficult or I just wasn’t good at them, but I definitely had to get over that to do art in this industry. Honestly, I could probably dial back the amount of backgrounds and props I do in my comic art, but at this point I don’t know how XD
What is your primary inspiration when creating art?
In my personal work, I’ve been exploring a lot of anxieties that come from being a woman as well as someone with mental health challenges. I am definitely inspired by horror-themed comics and films, but lately I want to find a way to take some of the hurt and confusion I feel inside and turn it into something really visually interesting and visceral; I feel like I’ve been exploring more classic folkloric monster stories because I just relate to them a lot right now, and I’m trying to make pictures from that emotion.
What other artists do you use to learn technique?
I follow a lot of amazing comic and horror artists online, and for better or worse, I am constantly looking to them for inspiration to step up my game… I’m of the opinion that I’m a rat-king of all the creators I like, an amalgamation of every bit of art I’ve enjoyed over the last few years XD

Where would you like to see yourself in five years with your art?
Comics is such a brutal schedule once you get into them, honestly I just hope that I can still be doing this! I think if you put in the manual hours your skills will just improve no matter what but keeping that passion alive is the harder part, so I hope that Jenn-Five-Years-From-Now still loves drawing for a job.
What would your dream project be?
I would love to do a creator-owned book inspired by one of the stories I wrote as a teenager, most of which were dark academia settings with youths fighting unknown monsters (whether those were vampires or eldritch horrors)

Final four questions –we ask everybody
Q) When the zombies take over the world where will you be?
At the Winchester having a nice cold pint, waiting for this all to blow over
Q ) How do you identify Jedi, lesbian, Ninja, gay, vampire, bisexual, were-wolf, transgender, pirate, asexual, fairy, aromantic, sith, intersex, Spartan, non-binary, wizard, genderfluid, time lord , queer, …? ?
“Sad Spooky Bisexual” is kinda my TM right now
Q) What piece of art, be it in the form of music, a book, a film or picture, do you think people must experience before they die?
Absolutely no one will be surprised for me to say the Bioshock video game series
Q) Give one fact that most people would not believe about you?
I’ll have been married eight years come this August (and with my partner for eleven years total)! Okay, people might believe that if they follow me online because I talk constantly about my husband, but I am a very open book and this is the only thing I could reasonably think of XD
