Introduction to The world of Absinthe and Arcana

Alright, so we are going to try a slightly different approach. I am going to craft more of an IP than a standalone story. One that will be usable for novels, games, and, the spaghetti monster willing, multiple movie projects. I am going to be doing deep dives into the background of the world and its inhabitants on Patreon, and including game stats, probably in Champions and DND formats. (because I like champions, and well DND is the big dog in TTRPG’s at the moment).

The world is going to be a mix of fantasy and steampunk aesthetics, kind of a mix of Lord of the Rings, the 1991 Mummy movie, and X-Men set in the Gilded Age, for the vibe. And y’all are going to have a front row seat. I would appreciate any thoughts regarding the world-building or the custom gaming content.

The setting of my new series is the world of Pastis. I wanted to set up the world so it could be used for storytelling across multiple formats. Some worlds are great set-ups for a large, thrilling adventure, but once the story is over, there is not much left to do with them. I love Middle-earth, but at the end of The Return of the king there is not much left to do. I wanted recurring opportunities set up from the get-go.

So the world of Pastis is one of young kingdoms rebuilding after the Antecedents vanished a millennium ago. The Antecedents were masters of great magics and sophisticated technology, having established themselves roughly equivalent to the second industrial revolution, before a great event led to their complete disappearance. The Antecedents were considered creatures of myth and legend until the discovery of the first Anchorhold. The Anchorholds are great structures buried deep underground that contain all the knowledge of the Antecedents. These enabled the young kingdoms to advance quickly and kick off an arms race to find all of the Anchorholds and the power they contained.

The Anchorholds were each consecrated to one of the twelve gods that the Antecedents worshipped. The presence of these shrines was so powerful that they leaked magic into the surrounding areas, altering the people who lived there and granting them exceptional abilities.

The stories will begin about 100 years after the discovery of the first Anchorholds. I intend to touch on subjects of love, adventure, found family, and fighting the powers that would keep a person down. I hope you come along for the ride.

(Note this was first a Patreon only post but made the decision to share more of the general world building stuff here with all the gaming materials and secrets going on Patreon)
