Review of Queer as all Get out by Shelby Criswell

I recently re-upped my membership at the local county library, both as an act of support and to relive the 90’s by making custom CD mixtapes.  They had moved things all around, and I had to wander the whole place, which turned out to be a good thing, as I stumbled upon Queer As All Get Out, 10 people who inspired me by Shelby Criswell.  I had never heard of the book or illustrator before, but I am a sucker for queer history.  I am so glad I did.  Shelby interweaves the stories of ten queer people from various times with her own personal story, creating a narrative device that draws you right in.  The book features some people whose stories are probably familiar to everyone in the community, like Magnus Hirschfeld, and lesser-known entries on people like Simon Nkoli, who was involved in the civil rights movement, and We’Wha, a Native American two-spirit person who was integral to her community.
The book is kind of amazing and a treat for any fans of graphic novels or queer history.  I am bummed I am late to the party on this, but I still give it two thumbs up.
