Copenhagen, Denmark – “Sauna,” the highly anticipated debut feature from director Mathias Broe, is set to release worldwide on November 18. The film, notable for being the first in Denmark to cast a transgender actor in a leading trans role, is an intimate reimagining of “Romeo and Juliet” that delves into themes of love, belonging, and identity within Copenhagen’s queer community.Based on the acclaimed book by writer and activist Mads Ananda Lodahl, “Sauna” centers on the evolving relationship between Johan, a gay man yearning for intimacy, and William, a trans man navigating the early stages of his transition. Their connection, sparked by a Grindr hookup, grows into a bond that both heals and challenges them, unfolding within the charged atmosphere of a gay sauna.
Director Mathias Broe expressed his excitement about bringing new perspectives to queer cinema, stating, “I had never seen a love story between a trans gay man and a cis gay man before.” He added that the story deeply resonated with him, depicting many of the questions faced by LGBTQ+ individuals. Broe drew inspiration from Lodahl’s book and his own life, noting that his partner began transitioning during the film’s production, making it a deeply personal project. Authenticity was a key factor in casting William, with rising star Nina Rask taking on the role after an open call. Rask brings warmth and humor to the character, while Magnus Juhl Andersen portrays Johan. Broe recalled the undeniable chemistry between the two actors during casting.
The sauna itself plays a pivotal role, serving as both a refuge and a site of rejection for the characters. Broe explained, “The sauna functions as the catalyst of the film. It intrigues them both, but splits them apart because of conservative ideas around gender identity and transphobia.”While rooted in specific queer experiences, “Sauna” aims for universality, exploring the beautifully flawed human experience of love. Broe hopes the film will also challenge norms within the LGBTQ+ community, stating, “Hopefully Sauna will dismantle some of those ideas and limitations we put on each other and make people reflect on the script we’re all forced to follow.”Shot over six weeks with a small crew, “Sauna” features a soundtrack by queer and underground Danish musicians, including Anton Falck of First Hate, Debbie Sings, Asbjørn, and Raymonde Gaunoux. Broe envisions “Sauna” as a means to broaden queer representation in cinema, echoing William’s words in the film: “I need you to understand where I am.” He believes that “our stories deserve to be acknowledged on the same level as any others.””Sauna” will be available to rent or own on all major digital platforms beginning November 18.
