Making people visible is a powerful incitement to tolerance, and direct, unsentimental photography does it very well. The impact is multiplied considerably by the global range of strong LGBTQ photo books from The New Press.”

– Peter Galassi, former chief curator of photography at MoMA.

In 2015, The New Press, a leading publisher of books that promote and enrich public discussion and understanding of the issues vital to our democracy, launched a series of photo books that highlight diverse and vibrant LGBTQ communities across the globe. The series, which is the result of a unique collaboration between the Arcus Foundation, Emerson, Wajdowicz Studios, and The New Press, comprises 19 stunning and affordably priced volumes that take us deep into LGBTQ communities where these superb photographers capture with their cameras insightful and moving stories of people fighting for social justice while also embracing new found freedom.

Portraits in Queer Resilience, Embracing New Dimensions

By Asafe Ghalib

For many queer people, exile begins at home. The search for safety and freedom to express themselves drives millions of LGBTQIA+ people across borders. Their stories are full of contrasts—between isolation and community, freedom and nostalgia. In their stunning compositions, photographer Asafe Ghalib explores the identities of members of the LGBTQIA+ immigrant community in Britain with striking beauty and poise.
