Review of Jonas Goonface’s proudly smutty dark fantasy graphic novel THE UNSINKABLE SHIP OF FOOLS  from Iron Circus comics

I think I need to get this out of the way before the review proper. Many of the things we review have some isolated explicit material within them. This is not that. This is an erotic graphic novel, where the majority of its content is geared towards adults. This is not a bad thing; I just want people to know before they check it out, much like when we reviewed Kinks and Cantrips.

That being said, I really enjoyed this one.  The ship of fools is not a ship but a train.  A train which, as the Were-Pyre Warren discovers, is a locomotive that once you get on, you are forever tied to.  The train abides by its own rules with neither time nor distance tied to that of the outside world.  Warren soon finds himself part of a crew that has no jobs (those only serve bosses)  but only roles.

Roles they perform on the ship and as part of a circus when the train makes its stops.   The people on the train have been on the run for something but find solace in each other, both romantically and physically.  As we follow the train to its final destination, we get to know all the inhabitants as they grapple with what things like freedom and found family truly mean.

The writing is insightful, and every character we meet is fully fleshed out. You can almost feel the history of the choices that led them to the Ship of Fools. The art is the perfect companion to his writing; it is quirky, heartfelt, and enticing. If you are a fan of anarchy, great characters, or just quality smut, I urge you to give this one a shot.
