“I” is the third album professionally released by singer-songwriter Krystal Brown Her first work “Lady Sisyphus” was a highly introspective singer-songwriter project. Her second album “Sugar Free” was primarily a dance album with lyrics about deep topics such as absentee parents and the human-animal connection. Brown has continued in the vein of “Lady Sisyphus” and “Sugar Free” with the meaningful lyrics but the underlying music has taken on a more trendy and urban vibe.
The first song “For Real” is about a woman disillusioned with men and dating. Guest rapper Elementalk provides balance to the conversation through his rap showing the side of a good man willing to do the right thing.
“Ketamine” is a dark and gritty song about the harm drugs do and how they can desensitize one to real life.
“In Heat” is a fun song with lady rapper Abskull about going out dancing and having fun.
“At Night” was originally written by Brown to describe her creative writing and music making process. Brown feels that her best ideas come at night and that’s when a lot of her writing and recording is done. A friend suggested that the song take on a more sensual evolution instead. Brown enlists the help of UK Rapper LaToya Brobbey. Brobbey’s smooth raps turn the song into a pleasing auditory ride. Brown’s vocals and Brobbey’s raps blend well over the strange, dreamy atmospheric beat.
The single “I” sends Brown back to her dance roots through a song that is warm, sad and yet still upbeat. The subject matter is about the loss of Brown’s rescued rats: Thumbelina, Biggums and Master Splinter. Anyone who has ever lost a pet can relate to this subject and the fast paced beat keeps it from becoming bogged down and depressing.
The last song “What Kinda World” is a fast paced dance track with an alien vibe. It is about the state of the world today and suicide. Many people commit suicide every year. What kind of world have we built when people don’t even want to be in it? There’s so much snarkiness, negativity, harassment, trolling, and violence online and in the 3D world. We all need to come together to reduce this and make it a world where sensitive souls can thrive.
“I” shows off the strong songwriting we first heard on “Lady Sisyphus” along with the body moving beats introduced in “Sugar Free”. However, Brown has updated this new work for 2025 with more urban elements proving that she can explore many genres while putting her own distinctive stamp on them.
Krystal Brown (she/her) is a disabled asexual indie-dance singer/songwriter. She is from Hampton Roads Virginia and has been writing songs since she was 15 years old. She is currently promoting her latest album “I” which has a slightly more urban flavor than her previous works “Lady Sisyphus” has a singer songwriter vibe and “Sugar Free” is primarily a dance album). She loves animals and has rescued many including a tuxedo cat named Sylvester and a leopard gecko named Gilgamesh. In her spare time, she enjoys reading, caring for her animals and riding her adapted three wheel bike.
