Interview with Author and TTPG designer Casey Wolfe

Casey Wolfe is a self-described history nerd, film buff, avid gamer, and full-time geek. Casey is non-binary, ace, and disabled, she spends her time writing about their experiences in fictional form. They stopped by the virtual studio to have a conversation about their writing and upcoming projects.

Q) You describe your work as own voices content. Do you think it’s important for people to see themselves in media?

Very much so. It’s also important for people to read about people different from themselves – especially children. I think it’s one of the best ways to learn empathy. I know being able to read more stories (or ANY stories in most cases) about characters like me, would have made a big difference in how I perceived myself growing up.

Q) I saw that you had also written a rules lite RPG to run horror games. Have you ever thought about putting out a game or supplements based around your novels?

I have and I am! For my Inquisition Trilogy verse, I’ll be releasing a Campaign Frame usable in Daggerheart when the full release drops. I’m also planning to write up a setting guide that would be usable for whatever system you enjoy, covering multiple time periods in my verse.

Q) What other authors do you read to help with the craft and inspiration?

I actually don’t take too much inspiration from books, oddly enough. I mostly get inspiration from video games, music, movies/tv, and art. An exception being that, as a teenager, I was greatly inspired by the works of Amelia Atwater-Rhodes in crafting my own paranormal universe.

Q) If you could write a book set in a mainstream property what would it be?

My first thought would be novel tie-ins for the Riddick franchise. There’s some deep lore and history there, with plenty of opportunities to explore various characters and events.

Q) Where do you prefer to write?

In my big, comfy armchair.

Q) What is your next project you are working on?

I’m currently bouncing my focus between a few projects. I think it’s safe to say my main one is a sapphic Sherlock Holmes novel, and there’s a Weird West novel in the outlining stages. I’ve paused a couple others – a steampunk alt history and an urban fantasy – in favor of focusing on those at the moment. There’s also a couple prequel novels for The Inquisition Trilogy verse that are puttering around my folders.

In the TTRPG realm, I’m working on a full game. It’s a sci-fi space colonization setting. Like my horror game, the focus will be making it rules lite and approachable for newbies.

Q) If people want more information about your projects, where should they go?

My website, socials, and book/game info is all on my Carrd: AuthorCaseyWolfe.carrd.co

Q) When the zombies take over the world, where will you be?

Ideally, hiding out at home. There’s an advantage to dealing with a disaster in a space you’re familiar with.

Q) What is your favorite fandom?

Hmm, that’s a rough one. I haven’t really involved myself in fandom much the last few years. I was very active in the Riddick and Band of Brothers fandoms, and lurked a lot in the Dishonored fandom.

Q) What piece of art, be it in the form of music, a book, a film or picture, do you think people must experience before they die?

Honestly, anything that interests them. I see a lot of people avoid certain genres or types of media because it’s not considered “real art,” or force themselves into reading the classics because they feel like they have to do so. It’s worthwhile to try things you haven’t before, but don’t feel obligated to conform to some weird societal standard you feel pressed upon you. Do what makes you happy.
