Review of Dekkoo’s new streaming series Danny Will Die Alone

The latest original series to air on Dekkoo, the   streaming service dedicated to gay men, is Danny Will Die Alone.  The show follows Danny as he encounters love and drama while trying to find a partner via dating apps.  Danny is just recovering from a tough breakup and is learning that the dating scene of 2024 is full of up, downs, drama and sometimes a whole lot of cringe.   He provides a running commentary by breaking the fourth wall as we follow him   through a series of dates and hook ups  giving the viewer an unvarnished and funny view of what life is like as a gay man.

The show was initially set up as a web series and is presented as a series of 15 minute shorts , each one spotlighting his encounter with a different partner exploring  situations and stereotypes from trying to convert a hook up to a long term partner, to a consent  obsessed therapist,  all the way to  a republican.

The show with its breaking of the fourth wall and its flawed main character   may lead some to comparisons with Fleabag (and the series itself call this out) but to me it resembled more the John Cusack version of High Fidelity.   The show is very funny and there were some really laugh out loud moments to me from  the potential partner who refuses to let Danny shower  to the most awkward sexual roleplay dialogue in history.  I would suggest  that you spread out the viewing and not binge through the whole thing as once as it’s better in little chunks.  There is a second season coming which promises to make the episodes longer  and to introduce more reoccurring characters and  a continuing plot line  which I can’t wait to see what they will do with the new format.   The show is a funny snapshot of  the Gay tinder-sphere  and well worth checking out.
